CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
BT was pissed. He hadnât been able to find the SUV anywhere. He stopped at every place he could think of that was still open on a Sunday night with no luck. He passed by another car several times that also appeared to be searching for someone.
At first he thought it was his watcher, but the man was too emotional and his behavior and driving too erratic to be one of the bossâs men. They would be well trained and more professional. They also wouldnât make themselves as obvious as this fool.
He gave up after a while and parked in the lot of a diner where he could keep an eye on the street. They had to come back from wherever they were eventually and this path was the main road.
As he waited, he ran down various ideas for satisfying the bossâs requirement. He did a sweep of the area not wanting to be taken by surprise and noticed a car parked across the street in the Rite Aid lot. The store was closed but someone was behind the wheel. BT studied the car, which he guessed was an Audi, and the man, who he really couldnât see. He unzipped the small duffel bag he had ready for his nighttime excursions and withdrew binoculars. While laying across the console below the window, he lifted his head and focused the glasses on the vehicle. He was right about the car being an Audi, and that pleased him. He prided himself on noticing and identifying quality and luxury.
The man appeared to be relaxed. Though he didnât make a point of staring, he did shoot furtive glances toward BTâs car. This man was a professional. BT was sure his purpose was twofold: first, to watch and report BTâs progress; and two, to act as assassin, should BT fail. The sight satisfied his belief that the boss was watching him. It also angered him. After all, he considered himself as much a professional as thisâwhat? Assassin? Certainly his own skills were more marketable and necessary than this hired thug.
BT sat up and allowed the anger to boil over into rage. Then he decided to do something about the situation. It would be his skill against this other manâs. He slid his Ruger from the bag, chambered a round, and set the weapon on his lap. Then he started the car and drove into the street. The Rite Aid was to the right and across the street, perhaps fifty yards down the road. BT slowed. Then, as if making a last-second decision, he whipped the wheel and pulled into the lot. He took his time backing into the spot next to the Audi so the two men would be side by side.
He stopped the car but left the engine running and raised the glasses. He pretended to scan the street for a moment. He leaned back in his seat, lowering the glasses to his lap, and picked up the gun. After a minute, he made a show of glancing left and doing a double take when he spotted the man.
